Learning
Hey! I hope you've had chance to enjoy my little game! I just felt like it'd be good to do a post-mortem about what I learnt and what I'd do differently.
With what I learnt, I feel like I've gotten more familiar with game loops in general. I've made a few prototypes before for mechanics but rarely wrapped it together in a game loop. Also, playtesting. The joy of this idea is that it's so easy to test before implementing anything - grab a chess board, a die and a nice cuppa tea and try the game out. It quickly became pretty clear what rules could be introduced - limited captures per turn, limiting what can get captured, maybe even a different board size of some kind.
I think what I'd like to do if I had chance to do it all over would be to get some sound effects recorded, so it's not just silence. The game could also do with more animations, especially while loading between scenes, and perhaps a settings screen to adjust certain game settings, maybe even a form of 'scenario editor' where you can add/remove pieces from a custom sized board.
But for the initial scope of the game, I'm proud with what I've got. I stuck to a plan, and developed a vision with clarity and not having to worry about feature creep ballooning the scope to something I couldn't finish. Next jam, I'll probably focus on figuring out bots to play against to get used to that.
